Her heroes will face monsters intent on destroying them from every side - including the monsters within. In This Savage Song, Victoria Schwab creates a gritty, seething metropolis, one worthy of being compared to Gotham and to the four versions of London in her critically acclaimed fantasy for adults, A Darker Shade of Magic. But Kate discovers August's secret, and after a failed assassination attempt the pair must flee for their lives. When the chance arises to keep an eye on Kate, who's just been kicked out of her sixth boarding school and returned home, August jumps at it. One who can steal a soul with a simple strain of music. All August wants is to be human, as good-hearted as his own father, to play a bigger role in protecting the innocent - but he's one of the monsters. All Kate wants is to be as ruthless as her father, who lets the monsters roam free and makes the humans pay for his protection. Kate Harker and August Flynn are the heirs to a divided city - a city where the violence has begun to breed actual monsters. The first of two books, This Savage Song is a must-have for fans of Holly Black, Maggie Stiefvater, and Laini Taylor. In this dark urban fantasy from acclaimed author Victoria Schwab, a young woman and a young man must choose whether to become heroes or villains - and friends or enemies - with the future of their home at stake. I'm pretty sure this book tore my heart out and shoved it back in more than once.I highly recommend this to any reader that loves fantasy, adventure and a bit of blood. There's no such thing as safe in a city at war, a city overrun with monsters. From the characters you hate to love and love to hate (and love to love), it is a wild ride of emotions. My first thought was, another monster/human romance? Really? In a repugnant, post-apocalyptic america, this had the potential to be another YA dystopian novel that would fade into the back behind books like the Hunger Games, The Giver and Divergent, But no more than 10 pages in I knew I was hooked. I didn't read any reviews about them and I didn't know that there would be such a lack of romance.

This was the first Schwab book I'd ever picked up.

There aren't many YA books that don't have a central focus on romance these days, though it does have a hint or taste here and there, really, it was almost refreshing for romance to play such a small role. I absolutely devoured these two books in about two or three days. " I didn't know how badly I needed this book until I got my hands on it. Schwab describes this duology as "Sin City PLUS Romeo and Juliet MINUS romance PLUS monsters.
